The full year of 2010 is likely to prove the single best on record for semiconductors used in televisions, according to analyst iSuppli.

A number of modern and developing technologies are driving this, including the use of LEDs as backlights, the market research organisation explains.

Compared with 2009's growth rate of 5.5 per cent, 2010's performance is expected to reach almost six times that level of expansion at around 29 per cent.

This is likely to take the TV semiconductors sector to an 11-figure dollar value overall for the first time, iSuppli says.

Randy Lawson, manager and principal analyst for display and consumer electronics, says: "To support the various sophisticated features that today's consumers are demanding, LCD TVs are incorporating more semiconductor content."

The positive growth follows what iSuppli calls a "very volatile year" for semiconductors used in televisions, capped by the modest growth achieved in the fourth quarter of 2009.ADNFCR-1785-ID-19907430-ADNFCR
